Rejoice, O Full of Grace!

Rejoice, O Full of Grace!
Rejoice, O Full of Grace!

“I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”

And I said: “Here I am, send me.” (Isaiah 6:8*, emphasis added).

It is a true honor when the Lord entrusts you with His special mission. The Creator of heaven and earth uses us, humans, to carry out His works, and that is something extraordinary. Today we remember the events when the Virgin Mary received a special mission from God.

She is a young woman named Mary, betrothed to a man named Joseph. On a very ordinary day, while likely attending to her household duties, an angel unexpectedly appears before her. When he greets her with the words, "Rejoice, favored one!", we learn from the text that this troubles Mary (Luke 1:28-29*). The very message the angel delivers to her is hardly less unsettling: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God; and behold, you will conceive and bear a Son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end" (Luke 1:30-33*).

No matter what her emotions were when she understood that God had chosen her to bear the Savior of the world, she simply said: “Here I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me according to your word” (verse 38*, emphasis added). If Mary had not accepted, the Lord would have used someone else, because He always carries out His intentions, but He desires us to participate in them.

Despite all the difficulties (like what her fiancé's reaction would be, for example), she is humble before God and ready to obey. Although the role Mary played is unique and unrepeatable, God surely desires to include us in His plans as well.

What might be the mission God is calling you to? Could He want to use you for something special at this moment?
