"But someone will ask: 'How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?' Foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies! And when you sow, you do not sow the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or something else. But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, fish another, and birds another. There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, and the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another" (1 Cor. 15:35-40).
When we hear the word "resurrection," most of us immediately associate it with Jesus Christ, who rose from the dead. But His victory over the grave shows what will happen to us as well (see 1 John 3:2). One day, every believer in Christ who has died will experience bodily resurrection similar to His, and those who are living at His Second Coming will exchange their mortal bodies for immortal ones in the blink of an eye.
One of the first questions people ask is: "What will I look like?" These imperfect earthly bodies will be transformed into glorious bodies like Christ’s—except for His divinity, of course. In the passage from 1 Cor. 15:35-58, the apostle Paul gives us some insight into their characteristics: they will be imperishable, glorious, powerful, and spiritual. Never again will we know sin, illness, pain, suffering, weakness, fatigue, or death.
Another common question is: "Will we recognize our loved ones?" Consider the following: Can these glorious bodies be limited in any way? Our senses and mental abilities will be fully developed, not diminished.
A glorious future awaits us, but the joy of the new body and the reunion with our loved ones pales in comparison to seeing the Lord Jesus face to face. He is the One who makes all of this possible. Out of gratitude, let us serve Him today with faithfulness and love.
