In memory of His Holiness Pope Francis (1936 – 2025)

From The United Bible Societies

With deep respect and sorrow, The United Bible Societies (United Bible Societies) express their condolences on the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis—a truly God-devoted individual, a faithful ambassador of the gospel, and a unique prophetic voice of our times.

Pope Francis was a man of God's word. His profound love for the Holy Scripture shaped his ministry and inspired millions worldwide to engage with the living Word of God. His sermons and testimony were grounded in the truth of the gospel, and his life reflected the humanity, compassion, and courage of Christ himself, whom he faithfully followed. He was a bridge-builder—tirelessly working for reconciliation in a divided world and opening doors for dialogue across denominational and religious boundaries. His dedication to unity, justice, and peace extended far beyond the walls of the Catholic Church, inviting all people of good will to be united in hope. His open heart and outstretched hands were a testament to the reconciling love of Christ.

Pope Francis was a friend of the Bible Societies. He embraced the essential mission of making the Bible accessible to all nations and supported the Societies' work with generosity of spirit and sincere collaboration. His appreciation for the mission to translate and distribute the Bible was unwavering.

Many Bible Societies around the world serve Catholic communities, working shoulder to shoulder with priests, bishops, religious educators, and leaders to ensure that the Holy Scripture is accessible and alive in the hearts of all faithful. Pope Francis led this mission, acknowledging that God's word belongs to all and acts transformatively on everyone it reaches.

With gratitude for his life and legacy, we also dedicate ourselves to the values he so beautifully embodied: a strong love for the Holy Scripture, a life centered on the gospel, humble service, a fearless pursuit of reconciliation, and the transformative power of the Bible.

May the Lord welcome him with the words: "Well done, good and faithful servant!" (Matt. 25:23 NIV) and may his memory serve as encouragement and blessing for all of us.
