“Heal me, Lord, and I shall be healed; save me and I shall be saved, for you are my praise” (Jeremiah, chapter 17, verse 14*).
For several years, I suffered from severe back pain and wore a metal brace for support. I prayed for the Lord to heal me, but I couldn’t stop wearing the brace. One day I decided to take it off and discovered that the pain was gone and I could move freely again. Now I know that God had been healing me all those years; I just needed to remove the brace and realize that I had been touched by God’s miraculous healing.
This experience reminds me of the story of the woman healed in Luke 13. She had been unable to straighten up for eighteen years. Christ addressed her, saying, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity!” (verse 12*). He then laid his hands on her, and she was healed. The woman straightened up and praised God.
It may be difficult for us to open our minds and hearts to accept God’s mercy. We often cling tightly to thoughts, beliefs, or behaviors that hold us back. But when we let them go, we allow God to work within us and set us free.
