God's Greatness

God's Greatness
God's Greatness

"To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness will you compare with Him?" (Isaiah 40:18*).

If you ask a group of people what God is like, you'll likely get a variety of responses. Most often, these reveal more about the individual rather than about God. In fact, the truth about Him might surprise you.

As the Father reveals Himself in Scripture, you will never encounter the pronoun "it" in reference to God. He is a person. In various instances, He is referred to by name (Jehovah, Elohim, Lord) or with a masculine singular pronoun (He, Him). The Lord possesses all the attributes of personhood—intelligence, to reason; emotions, to feel; and a will, to make decisions.

Scripture also presents us with God's immutability. Neither His nature nor His character ever changes—He is always Spirit, and His love remains steadfast. We can all be assured that God's principles will remain true and that He will act exactly as He has promised. Joy, anger, and other emotions are not new manifestations but part of His nature, and His emotions are always an appropriate expression in every situation.

God is eternal—He has no beginning or end (Psalm 90:2) and is the same yesterday, today, and forever. No one created Him; He simply is. For people, it is difficult to grasp this, as well as to comprehend His ways (Romans 11:33). But we should be thankful that our God is far greater than we can ever understand.
