"Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: You saw all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to his whole country—the great trials that your eyes saw, the great signs and wonders" (Deuteronomy, ch. 29, verses 1-2*).
In the text from Deuteronomy, ch. 29, we read how Moses gathers the people to make a covenant with God. However, he does not start in the way we might expect—with the details of the covenant itself, what the people must do, what the Lord would do, and the outcomes of their faithfulness or unfaithfulness. Instead, in his introduction, Moses reminds the people of all that God has already done.
What things their eyes had seen! What things they had touched and tasted! The Lord had entered their lives in tangible, undeniable ways, and because of these experiences and memories, they know that "the secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, so that we may follow all the words of this law" (Deuteronomy, ch. 29, verse 28*).
The truth still holds today that our confidence and trust in God for the future grow as we remember what He has already done in our lives, although holding on to these memories can be more difficult than it sounds.
What are the stories of your faith and that of your family? How and when has God met you, guided you, and cared for you? Let us find ways to tell these stories—to ourselves, to our children, and to their children.
