“Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it” (Mark, Chapter 10, Verse 15*).
Elijah was four years old and learning to swim. He managed easily in the shallow part of the pool but was afraid to swim in the deep end. However, one day during his lesson, Elijah did it.
As we walked home, I praised him for this remarkable achievement. I asked him:
- How did you do it?
Without hesitation, Elijah replied:
- God helped me.
I thought: “If only my first thought when facing serious challenges in life had been ‘God helped me’! Where might that have led me in my journey with God?”
Christ loves children for their simple faith. They willingly come into His arms, knowing He loves them and they are safe. God's power is perfectly displayed in childlike faith. David demonstrated such faith when he used a river stone to defeat Goliath (see 1 Samuel, Chapter 17). The stone was not magical, but David's faith overcame the giant.
The next time we face fears that threaten to overwhelm us, I pray that we have this childlike faith to step into the deep and entrust ourselves to God. He will help us!
