"Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is" (1 John 3:2*).
My sister always flips through the pages of new books to see how the story will end. I don't do that. I love entering the world of the characters and partaking in their adventures. I don’t want to know beforehand how things will unfold.
I can’t say the same for my life. I would like to peek into the future. Soon, my last child will step into adulthood. Being a mother has been my goal for years. What will happen when this role comes to an end?
The book of Habakkuk gives me comfort. Habakkuk suffers due to the violence and destruction surrounding him. The situation remains the same, and yet, at the end of the book, he is joyful. What changes? The Lord reveals to him how the story will end. I imagine God telling him, "Don't worry, Habakkuk. I will take care of it. Everything will be alright." Understanding God's plans for the future renews Habakkuk's faith in God's sovereignty in the present. Confusion and fear leave his heart.
I may not know what my life will look like years from now, but, like Habakkuk, God has shown me how it will all end. One day I will be renewed in the image of Christ and live with Him forever. That is something worth turning the pages for.
